Handmade Holiday Gifts

The holidays are approaching, and you want to experience the gift giving process as smoothly as possible. Here are ideas to inspire and assist you.

The first thing you want to do is gather small to medium size wooden objects such as clothespins, coasters, napkin rings, candlesticks, and more. Blank bookmarks and notebooks are equally good. Next, you will need acrylic craft paint, brushes (hog and synthetic), all-purpose sealer (optional), and a bottle of polyurethane varnish (satin finish is nice). You can purchase these items at your local arts and crafts shop or even a department store.

Before you begin, think about each person you wish to offer a gift. What is their favorite color? Which texture does he/she prefer? What is their decorative style? These questions will enable you to create a customized piece for them.

Apply a coat of all purpose sealer to your wooden objects. Doing so will allow the first coat of paint to stay on the surface instead of soaking into the porous items. Or you can skip the sealer and put two layers of paint. Flexible templates help with designs or use your own ideas. It is up to you. Let the beautifully painted pieces dry overnight and apply a thin coat of varnish the following day. Do not go over the strokes once you have brushed on the varnish because it will leave unwanted marks.

Wait twenty-four hours before wrapping. Tulle bags make a lovely presentation. Consider including an accessory that goes with the theme of your gift. For example, add a pretty candle with the candlestick or cloth napkins to go with the rings. Tie your holiday treat bags with the painted clothespins. Let your imagination take center stage.

These handmade presents are great for hosts and even for fundraising. Your friends and family will cherish them. Have a wonderful time making your unique gifts.

See you next month!
