Lesson 2 : "Creating your Mandala Outline"
Supplies: pocket folder, blank sheets (printing paper), graphite pencil, a ruler or geometric shape template (optional).
Please note that the following images are used to illustrate specific notions, and I don't expect you to copy my designs. I'm certain you have unique ideas waiting to be explored.
1. Observe each drawing of your favorite symbols from lesson 1 and select three.
2.Draw a circle on a blank sheet of paper. Add a center and cardinal points (north, south, east, west). The four points as well as the one in the center will enable you to obtain symmetry. Refer to the first image below.
3. Before you begin, notice how the circles and squares are equally positioned in the picture.
4. See how shapes are placed inside and outside the circle on the book's cover photo.
5. Next, using your graphite pencil, draw one symbol/shape on the cardinal points.
6. Rotate the shapes if need be (like I have done with the squares). Place your second symbol/shape in between the others.
7. Add your third symbol/shape and repeat it in a variety of sizes as you move inside your mandala.
8. You are welcome to make different mandala outlines in order get comfortable with this artform. See other examples in the second image.
Design the mandala you desire, not the one you feel it "ought" to be. Next month, we will explore how to fill in your mandala outlines.
Enjoy!
