Art Making: Getting Started

Organizing a space for art making can be daunting at first. Yet, it is not as difficult as it seems. Consider the following suggestions.

Decide the place in which you will create. It may be at home, your studio, your classroom, or another space. Scan the size of the room and select the exact spot you will make art. Do you need a table, an easel, a stool, and/or chairs? Make a list if necessary. Depending on the room, use furniture that you already have and consider protecting it with sturdy plastic tablecloths. Doing so eases cleanup.

Reuse or buy transparent bins, plastic bags, and glass jars. This allows you to see your supplies and prevents you from overspending, which is quite tempting in an art store… Metal tins are practical and nice to look at. They are good for storing brushes, pencils, pens, markers, scissors, glue sticks, and rulers. In addition, colorful cardboard boxes with sections can hold a variety of papers and small objects useful for collages. I always like to go around my home and see what I could reutilize for keeping my art supplies. For example, old mugs, teacups, even trays can be repurposed in your art making room. Items such as these add a pretty touch and are inspiring.

Place your containers on shelves, in a cabinet, or in a closet. Make a section for paper as well as canvases, one for tools, and another for mediums like paint. Sprays and solvents should remain in a metal cabinet or on the bottom shelf close to the ground (keep away from children). Be sure to wash your containers and avoid using ones that held nuts in case you or a student has allergies.

I hope such tips will help you organize your space in a pleasant manner.

Enjoy!
